Every January in Breckenridge, Colorado, volunteers and towns folk come together to create these giant blocks of packed snow. While one remains a cube, the rest will be carved into magnificent works of snow art. This is an absolutely amazing opportunity to wander around the blocks and take some pics with some dramatic shadows and lines mixed in.
I was doing a local delivery when I decided to pull over and take a few pics of the set up going on. I parked on Ridge Street, just east of Main Sreet and walked down past the Arts District. The Tin Shop and the Fuqua Stable are next to the Barney Ford Museum.
If you didn't hear, this past week Breckenridge has received over four feet of snow. Yes, Breckenridge's new gold is snow. It will attract lots of skiers and visitors and even last-minute winter elopements by adventurous couples looking for an alternative mountain wedding.
I would tell you who this guy is (maybe it's Barney Ford, I'll check later), but the snow is covering up the sign.
In the historic district of Breckenridge, you'll find all sorts of shops, restaurants and yes, real estate offices. Don't forget your mandatory t-shirt. No one leaves town without one. You have to brag about coming to one of the best ski towns ever.
This is the block that will sit in the middle of the Blue River Plaza and will show everybody what the artists started with. The carving process takes a few days and workers chisel at the snow through the night on the final day.
One of the buildings pictured here is supposedly visited by a female ghost. I've been wanting to try the haunted tour offered by the town. That'll have to be a video blog special post. Stay tuned for that one.
These guys were using a crane to remove the walls that held the snow together.
It looks like this guy churns up a pile of snow and then blows it into the box. The Town of Breckenridge has some cool equipment to put this show on. It attracts thousands of folks, so yes, it will be busy. Avoid peak crowds by visiting early morning. The sculptures will be lighted for night viewing as well.
Snow Henge
The perfect blank canvas for a snow sculptor. Near the Riverwalk Center, a local kid's competition is held as well, and produces some very cool stuff. Please share any cool pics with us and we'll blog about it!
